For Read Across America Day at Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School, members of our staff and local community visited kindergarten through fourth grade classrooms to read selected Dr. Theodor Seuss stories. Reading specialist Mrs. Karen LaPlaca coordinated a schedule of mystery guest readers for each class including Head of School Heather Zolnowski, former Head of School Dr. Kevin O’Malley, Franklin police officer Chris Spillane, former fourth grade teacher Judy Bergesen, kindergarten teacher Mrs. Patricia Tagen and technology teacher Mr. Richard Stemple, to name a few.

Now in its 16th year, the National Association of Education (NEA) has held Read Across America on Dr. Suess’ birthday to raise awareness about children’s literacy. After all, if we have parades for winning sports teams and weeks to celebrate kindness, doesn’t reading deserve a day?

After our mystery readers departed, children were given time to enjoy a favorite book in their classroom. The day was a smashing success!
