I hope that you all had a happy and safe Holiday Season! At long last I am able to write with an update on the status of the major Charter Amendment request that was submitted this past August to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Just recently the DESE followed up with us on our request and although the process has taken longer than expected we have received some very good feedback.
We were originally hopeful that we might have a final decision on our request in the January but based on recent feedback it looks like a decision is more likely in March. The DESE has acknowledged the longevity of BFCCPS as one of the oldest Charter Schools in the state, and our consistent track record of academic excellence. They have requested some additional information in order to make an informed decision. Most of the information they are looking for is related to finances, facilities and demand for our program. It is with this last item, enrollment demand, that we need your help.
We are in the process of gathering the additional information that the DESE has requested and will have that to them quickly. One of the metrics that the DESE will be looking at is the historical and current demand for seats at BFCCPS, evidenced by our application numbers from this year’s lottery, Now, more than ever, we need your help to increase awareness in Franklin and the surrounding communities of what a wonderful place BFFCPS is for our students and families. If we can increase the number of applications it will go a long way towards ensuring the success of our Charter Amendment request!
While new seats for the 2014-2015 school year are limited, if we are able to demonstrate to the DESE that there is significant demand for our program, future availability of seats and likelihood of acceptance will be substantially higher. Please check the school calendar for upcoming enrollment activities, as it is always helpful to have current families attend these activities so that they can answer questions or be a part of some great discussions.
Please encourage your friends with K-8 children to look at our website, and to submit an enrollment application before the February 24th deadline. For the first time application can be submitted online, and can be completed in a few short minutes. Any K-8 student in Massachusetts can apply. You can help this endeavor a great deal by forwarding this link.
As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me and thank you for your help.
