There’s nothing quite like French week at BFCCPS! We were so excited to kick off this week-long celebration of French language and culture at our new building.
In preparation for the celebration, these adorable signs were hung throughout the building allowing our new and younger students can catch up on their French vocabulary.
French Market and Photo Booth
This year’s French Week started off with French Mini-Markets throughout the school. Merchandise included light up Eiffel towers, berets, squishy soccer balls, jewelry, fake mustaches, decorative fans hand knit hats and more. Students of all ages also enjoyed the chance to hop into a French themed photo booth. All proceeds from the French market benefit the upcoming Grade 7 trip to Quebec next spring!
Students in Grades Six through Eight packed a variety of French inspired delights for lunch on Wednesday afternoon. They enjoyed an extended lunch period filled with French entertainment and each class prepared songs specifically for the occasion.
Featured performance included a solo performance by Lilly M, a student choreographed can-can and a quartet titled “Sur les Murs”. Many thanks to our Grade Eight students Jason, Thomas, Lorelai, Ryan and Grace who served as hosts and emcees of the afternoon.
Josee Vachon – French Canadian Folksinger
Thanks to the BFCCPS PCO all students were treated to performances by French Canadian Folksinger Josee Vachon. Over the last few years Mrs. Vachon has performed for BFCCPS students many times. Students enjoyed singing along to familiar Francophone tunes, learning to “clog” and kept the rhythm with a set of spoons.
Shown below is a group of Grade 8 students who showing off their skills playing the spoon. This is always a favorite during the annual visit to the Sugar Shack on the Grade Seven Quebec Trip.
French Games: Bleu! Blanc! Rouge!
Each year our Grade Eight students participate in a French game, this years’s restaurant themed relay race is titled “La Bataille des Bistros.” As always, the event begins with the Quebec national anthem directed by Mme. Malouf.
Mr. McSweeney and Mrs. Kovacs were the event hosts for the day. This year we were especially delighted to have our Quebec pen pals in attendance for the games!
Team Bleu and Team Rouge raced in preliminary heats of three groups of students; the winning teams raced against Team Blanc (the teachers) in the finals. In the end, the Team Blanc reigned as this year’s champions!
Grade 5 & 6 French Fair
On Monday, November 18th students in Grades Five and Six presented in our first academic fair of the year. Students, parents and faculty had the chance to visit the fair to learn about regions of France, French speaking countries, and various aspects of French culture.
Many thanks to Mme. Canning, Mme. Malouf and Mme. McNamara for an outstanding first Semaine Française in our new home! You can find more photos in this Google Photo Gallery.
