In Celebration of Black History Month, the fifth grade teaching team invited LATORIAL FAISON, a Poet, Author, and Professor to host a virtual Poetry Reading and discussion for all fifth grade BFCCPS students. Faison proudly serves on the faculty at Virginia State University where she teaches writing and African American Literature and is also a doctoral candidate. She is a recipient of numerous poetry prizes and awards and has authored and edited thirteen books.
Faison authored a poem about Ruby Bridges. This beautiful poem connected to a mini-unit of study on Ruby Bridges the fifth graders completed during the month of February.
Faison met with fifth graders on Thursday, February 25th, 2021. She provided an overview of her education and career path. She then recited three problems she has authored: Ruby Bridges’ Brave Step, What is Black History, and Riding the Bus with Rosa Parks.
Students were very eager to participate in the Question and Answer session. Two students, Eden and Sai, shared their own poetry with Mrs. Faison on the Google Meet! After the event, students were sharing their ideas and thoughts with their teachers. Kaleigh liked the Rosa Parks Poem and said, “Mrs. Faison crafted the poem so that we felt like we were in Rosa Park’s shoes!” Caroline liked the Rosa Parks Poem because it showcased “how brave and selfless Rosa Parks was.” Shannon enjoyed the “rhyme and rhythm of the Rosa Parks Poem.”
The fifth grade teaching team is delighted to share that Mrs. Faison will be returning in April to teach a Virtual Poetry Unit for all fifth graders at BFCCPS!
