The sixth grade is reading Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan, and recreating the Willow’s (the protagonist’s) experience growing sunflowers as close to the book’s details as possible. The students scrounged for a recycled container to hold their seeds. They had a choice: to play it safe and plant three seeds as Willow recommended, or put all of their hopes into one seed as a class-favorite character, Quang-ha, chose.

On the first day of Spring, the students placed the seeds in damp paper towels, which will help the germination process. Next week, the class will place the seeds in soil. When the time is right, they will all be planted in our courtyard. Given that Willow and her friends had a wide variety of sunflowers, the BFCCPS community should see a great array of Radiance Hybrid, Lemon Chiffon, Velvet Queen, Moonwalker, Mammoth, Del Sol Hybrid, Solar Eclipse, Autumn Beauty, and Vanilla Ice florets in the near future!
