For the community service portion of the first grade December curriculum, students decided to sponsor St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. This is a nondenominational program that assits children, that are receiving treatment for cancer and other catastrophic diseases.
Working in partners, students worked together to make place mats for patients in the Memphis, Tennessee based hospital and are encouraged to create illustrations that promote positive and happy thoughts.
When speaking to a representative from St. Jude’s about our students participating, she wanted to be sure that all of the first graders know just how much the boys and girls at the hospital appreciate and enjoy receiving homemade place mats. Our December community service project is sure to spread a little bit of joy into some young people’s lives that have so much to contend with. We are happy to be able to make a small difference.
