Bonjour les amis! Je m'appelle Madame Canning and I am the French teacher for kindergarten through fifth grade.
Our philosophy is that learning a second language is a progression and it spirals up from grade to grade. During kindergarten through fourth grade, French is a weekly special and a fun, active introduction to the French language and culture. During each class, I try to cover each aspect of language acquisition: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students are introduced to basic vocabulary including colors, numbers, family, weather, days, months, food, animals, clothing, classroom items and much more! We do age appropriate activities from singing or games to writing a daily journal entry depending on the grade level.
Once students get to fifth grade, French increases to twice a week so that they are better prepared for the transition to middle school. Fifth graders earn a letter grade and have consistent homework and quizzes. I also find it greatly enjoyable with all grade levels to teach about the history and culture of France and French speaking countries, and I know it is of great interest to my students. I am really excited every September to reconnect with my old students and get to know those that are new. I look forward to another wonderful year of teaching and knowing our students!
Merci Beacoup et au revoir!
Madame Laurie Canning
