Karen LaPlaca

As a reading specialist, I have the wonderful opportunity to do a little bit of everything while working to support BFCCPS students in developing and enhancing literacy skills.   I take small groups for reading intervention, offer inclusion support in classrooms, consult with teachers, assist with school-wide literacy assessments, and provide parents with strategies to encourage and develop readers at home.  I try to do all I can to share my love of books and reading with the BFCCPS community!

I truly love my role as a reading specialist!  It allows me to share my love of reading and hopefully inspire that love of reading in my students.  I have been teaching at BFCCPS since 2000; first as a second grade classroom teacher, and then as the reading specialist starting in 2005.  Prior to that, I was a classroom teacher in grades 2, 3, 4, and 6.  I am also a mom to three school-aged children.  I am lucky that I get to do what I truly love as my profession!

I always tell my students that no one likes doing something that is difficult.  I often remind them that if they don’t practice, it won’t get any easier, and they won’t learn to love it.  This is true of anything…playing an instrument, sports, hobbies, and especially reading!!  The more you practice, the better you get!

My goal for this website is to provide parents with some helpful tools to assist you in your role as primary educator.  Reading at home is crucial to developing reading skills at every age.  Read everything and read often...that is the key to success!

Mrs. Hillary Dorsey, Mrs. Erin Fagone, and I will be working together to provide reading intervention and support services to our K-4 students.  Mrs. Lisa Scalone will also be joining the staff as the 5-8 reading specialist this year.

Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions, concerns, or advice.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I am here to assist you in any way possible!

Thank you!
