As part of the classical education mission, Latin is taught at the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School beginning in grade four and continuing through the eighth grade. Students in our fourth and fifth grades have Latin for one period each week. Students in sixth through eighth grade have Latin two periods each week.
Beginning with exposure to the language, culture, and mythology, the curriculum spirals to emphasize Latin vocabulary, grammar, and connections to the English language. Through the teaching of Latin, we also make connections to the Social Studies curriculum and reinforce the grammar skills taught in ELA.
The Latin curriculum utilizes the Minimus book series for grades four and five and the Ecce Romani series for grades six through eight.
All of our seventh and eighth grade students participate in the National Latin Exams annually.
