What Is a Charter School?


Charter schools are public schools open to any child, free of charge. They are founded by local parents, teachers, educators, and others. Each Charter School is founded upon a particular mission. If more children want to enroll in a school than it has space for, a random lottery determines who gets in—no admission hurdles, no entrance exams, no preferential treatment. Charter schools exist under the authorization of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Education Reform Act of 1993. They are independent public schools, each school’s individual charter is issued by the Commonwealth’s Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Charter schools must renew their charter every five years pursuant to a review process with the Board of Education to ensure the continued academic success of the school, it’s organizational viability and faithfulness to the terms of its charter. What is the Charter of the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School?

The Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School was founded in 1995 as one of the original 13 Charter Schools in the State of Massachusetts. BFCCPS was founded by a group of dedicated parents who were looking for a choice in their children’s education. This mission of our particular charter is as follows:

“Our mission is to assist parents in their role as primary educators of their children by providing students with a classical academic education coupled with sound character development and community service. Our mission is supported by four distinct, yet interconnected pillars that provide for a collaborative, rigorous education for all students. These pillars guide, direct and define the school in all it does.”

How Does the Enrollment Process Work?

Priority in the lottery is given first to siblings of current students, then to residents in the BFCCPS region (Bellingham, Blackstone, Franklin, Holliston, Hopedale, Medway, Mendon, Milford, Millis, Milville, Norfolk, Plainville, Upton, Walpole, Wrentham) then to residents of Massachusetts outside of the BFCCPS region.

Applicants must be a resident of the Commonwealth of  Massachusetts at the time of application to be considered for enrollment, and must reside in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts while attending the school.  Kindergarten entrance age is five by August 31 of the year of entry. BFCCPS will request reasonable proof of age related to this requirement prior to an offer of admission is made. Please note: we do not offer any exceptions to the age of entry. 

Students who receive a wait-list number must re-apply annually to confirm their interest in sending their student to BFCCPS. In accordance with state regulations all applicants, even siblings, must re-apply annually.  New application numbers and new wait-list assignments will be provided each year. We encourage all applicants to review our Enrollment Policy .

We have completed our enrollment process for the 2021-2022 school year.  We filled 96 spaces for Kindergarten and have generated waiting lists for Grades One through Eight.   At this time, we have a significant wait list in place and applications are not available.

What is the Curriculum?

BFCCPS offers a rigorous academic program including Foreign Language Instruction (starting with French in Kindergarten) as well as a strong commitment to Arts Education.  

For a closer look at what our students are currently learning, we encourage you to peruse our Curriculum Maps.  A curriculum map is a high-level overview of the unit sequence in a subject over the course of a school year. In these documents you can find MA Curriculum Frameworks alignment, essential questions of the subject matter, and major assessments. Maps will by updated at the end of each trimester as teachers edit them to reflect changes to the curriculum. They are designed to give parents an awareness of the main thrust of the curriculum and provide an opportunity for you to discuss topics and make connections at home that deepen what they are learning at school. 

Virtual Information Sessions: 

In a traditional year, BFCCPS hosts information sessions so that interested families can meet us in person, learn more about the school and have a building tour.  As a result of the continuing health crisis, in person meetings will not be possible this year so we’ve adjusted our plans accordingly.

This year, we have arranged for videos featuring our staff, parents, teachers and even a BFCCPS alumna to help you learn more about the BFCCPS Experience. While these videos can’t truly replicate our traditional face to face events we hope that our enthusiasm for the school is evident.
